When you’re young, you imagine that you have all the time in the world. You picture yourself a princess atop a castle made out of bubblegum and glitter. Everything is possible, everything is real.
Somewhere along the way we grow up. We no longer dream of being a princess anymore, but we shrink to fit our reality. Instead of wanting to be the president of the United States we settle for being the manager at the company that doesn’t really bring us joy.
We push off the things that make us light up, the things that we are passionate about, for the things that are sensible.
Why do we do this? Even though we’re older we still have that illusion that we have all the time in the world.
That was my reality. I traded in my passion for a steady paycheck at a company that I didn’t really care about. I pushed off my fitness goals to spend more time at the office. I told myself that I would meet the man of my dreams later.
Then my mom died.
At 27, my mother was killed in a car accident. I can still remember the last phone call we had like it was yesterday. She talked about her goals, wanting to leave our old neighborhood, have better, loving relationships, travel and see the world. But she was waiting to pursue her dreams because of money, time, and a variety of other excuses.
She didn’t have more time. She died never having realized any of her goals. And she died with me never having realized any of mine that I never even knew I had. I didn’t have the opportunity to deepen our relationship, make amends, tell her all the things I wanted to say.
I didn’t have the time to truly appreciate her.
I learned at 27 a lesson that would stay with me for the rest of my life.
Life is now.
The truth is, that none of us have more time. We aren’t promised anymore time than what we’ve been given. Life is happening right now, at this very moment. While you are reading this article, life is happening around you.
So ask yourself, are you living your dream life?
Are you putting something off until later?
Is there something that you would rather be doing?
Because if there is then you should go DO it! Nothing is promised to you. Live your life to the fullest while you can, because you never know when something will happen.
