“When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at will change.” ~ Wayne Dyer

I love this quote from Wayne Dyer, and I agree with it 100%. Not just because it sounds good, and it does!

But because I have experienced this in my own life, and it’s the basis for everything I teach; whether that’s in my online course (the Get SET method), in my manifestation training videos, inside my private facebook group, with my private clients, and even in my own family.

It’s also one of the core principles in most spiritual self-development books and philosophies, such as the teachings of Abraham, A Course in Miracles, The Bhagavad Gita, Think and Grow Rich, The Power of Now, and so on.

What we learn by reading and understanding these materials is that everything we see and experience is a result of what we think.

I don’t want to get too deep here – there are plenty of books, authors, and super scientific mindset gurus who do an excellent job at that, so I’ll leave it in their corner…

What I am good at though, is breaking down the mindset mumbo jumbo into practical actionable steps that will allow you to experience these results firsthand.

So here’s a simple way you can think about this concept, and experience it for yourself:

Positive psychology tells us that curiosity (along with gratitude, optimism, zest, and the ability to love and be loved) is one of the five character strengths that contribute most to our sense of life-satisfaction.

When we see with fresh eyes, we are seeing with a sense of curiosity. Here’s how you can apply this in your own life.

Just for today

Just for today – or even for an hour, or 30 minutes (if that’s all you can commit to) – decide to see the world and the things around you with FRESH eyes. ?

We get so used to seeing and judging things and people based on our past experience with that thing or person, that we rarely ever see them with fresh unbiased eyes. But answer this question:

“Do you want people to only see you and judge you based upon your past?” Of course not!

You want to be seen and experienced for who you are right now, not last year or even yesterday.

So just for today, what would happen if you gave that same opportunity to the people, things, and situations in your life?

To make it easier, go ahead a pick just one person, thing, or situation to practice this with. It could be your spouse, your pet dog, or your money situation.

Now that you have that one person or thing in mind, consider this…

What if instead of seeing that person (thing or situation) through yesterday’s eyes, you saw that person with completely fresh, unbiased and unassuming eyes?

Try it.

Allow your vision, your thoughts, and your language to be directed toward that person in a new light, as if meeting him or her for the first time. How do you see this person today, right now?

Feel your heart expand…breath deeply, and be a blank canvas upon which this person or thing can paint its impression upon you.

This is such a heart opening, and mind clearing practice.

It takes actual practice to get really good at it, but that’s what you’re doing by beginning today.

How I do this in my own life

For the past few weeks, I’ve included as a part of my Miracle Morning routine (which includes prayer, mantras, yoga, journaling) a request/intention that “this morning I see my husband with fresh eyes,” so that I don’t carry into this new day thoughts and experiences from yesterday or the day before.

This is important to me because after being with my husband for 11 years, it’s easy to see him with old eyes. To think that I know what he’s going to say, or how he’s going to think or respond…to turn him into someone “predictable” in my mind. But I don’t want to do that to my husband, or to me! Because that robs us both of the freshness we can create and experience in our daily lives.

And I don’t like stale things. Do you?

They often say we hurt the ones we’re closest to the most. I believe that’s because we rarely see the people in our lives with fresh eyes. Instead, we judge them based on past hurts, or assume we know everything there is to know about them, so therefore we don’t allow ourselves to be surprised or intrigued by them.

But what I know from quantum physics and from manifestation is that the past does not exist. And so when we use old eyes to see a person, thing, or situation, we are seeing them in a way that does not actually even exist. It’s not only gone, it’s just not real; we are simply projecting our memories onto that person.

Pretty trippy, huh

Take the fresh eyes challenge

After you read this, commit to taking the Fresh Eyes Challenge. Pick a person, thing, or current situation, and just for today commit to seeing that person, thing, or situation with fresh eyes.

Pay attention to how this practice opens up your heart and your connection to the universe. Then write about it in your journal.

If you enjoyed it, try it again tomorrow.
